Jason Basckin, a name
that seems to appear on this site with amazing repetition, has been
selected for the honour of joining the Australian Team for the 2009
Maccabiah. With the level of dedication shown in his training and
preparation, this comes as no surprise to us. Well done Jason!

Dylan Resnikov is
another name we will doubtless become well acquainted with in
competition circles. He has successfully defeated an international
standard field of tough competitors in Greece to be crowned World Thai
Boxing Champion, a a title that he
will bring home to a delighted Australian Maccabi Karate Guild. This is
no small accolade and we must congratulate Dylan for a job well done.
Resnekov, 24, had to win two bouts in 40 minutes of competition in
Cyprus to claim victory by knocking out a seven-time champion from
Azerbaijan after just 90 seconds in his semi-final, and then backed up
to beat a top Russian fighter in a points decision to capture the title.
Visiting Masters
Shihan
Kenny Uytenbogaardt (7th Dan Kyokushin)
Shihan Kenny visited
Sydney all too briefly and was hosted by Shihan Trevor Tockar of the
Hakoah Dojo during his stay. The 2 Shihans were training partners and
team mates on the South African International tournament teams that
toured the world in previous years.
Shihan Kenny taught a
seminar at the Rose Bay RSL Club, which was filled to beyond capacity
with Black Belts from various styles, all there to catch a glimpse of a
global phenomenon. Shihan Kenny is highly respected the world over as
one of the foremost teachers of Kyokushin and he did not disappoint on
this occasion.
The gruelling 4 hour
seminar was enjoyed by all and the social catch-up afterward was equally
enjoyable.
We sincerely thank Shihan
Trevor Tockar and the team from the Hakoah Dojo for giving us the
opportunity to train with such a legend. We will never forget it.
Master
Yoshikazu Sumi (8th Dan Shotokan)
Sensei Sumi is the Chief
Instructor of the Karate Union of Australia, based in Tokyo and visits
only every few years when his sessions are normally closed to KUA senior
instructors.
On this occasion however,
he agreed most enthusiastically to host a special open training session
for all senior instructors representing all Maccabi Guild organisations,
styles and dojos.
An original Master of the
JKA (Japan Karate Association), Sensei Sumi was internationally revered
as the All Japan Armed Forces Champion and today he presides over many
national organisations in countries all over the world.
The lesson was a fabulous
technical one and enjoyed by all. Photos of the event are available for
viewing and download until July 30th 2008 via this link...

We recognise the efforts
of Sensei Elliot Kleiner of the Karate Union of Australia, and his team
from Coogee and Bronte Dojos for their efforts in putting on this event.
It was inspirational.
