Hanshi
John Taylor. Kyokushin Style
John Taylor (9th Dan)
started training 1963. Later in 1970 he travelled to Japan and trained
under the founder of Kyokushin Karate Sosai Oyama for one year. He
returned to Australia and founded the Australian Kyokushin Karate
Association and became President, a position maintained by him today.
In 1997 he was elected Vice President of the International Karate
Organisation Kyokushin Kaikan and graded to 9th Dan with Kancho
Matsushima 10 years later. He was only the second person in the world to
be graded to 9th Dan in Kyokushin Karate. John runs Kyokushin Karate
schools in Bondi Junction and Bondi Beach.

Sensei Zivko Delevski. Shotokan Style
Sensei
Zivko Delevski commenced his Karate training in Macedonia. He joined SKAA under Sensei Frank and eventually became the first
student to complete the entire syllabus from white to black belt with
that organisation.
In late
1972 Zivko moved to Australia and joined the SKIA organisation,
eventually becoming one of their most senior and respected instructors.
In 2006 Zivko was successfully graded to the rank of 7th Dan in Japan,
making him the most senior grade Karate-ka in the Guild.
During
his 36 year Karate career thus far, Sensei Zivko has represented
Australia 4 times at world championship competitions and many other
State, National and World Events, reaching the finals each time. Sensei
Zivko teaches at his Maroubra Dojo twice weekly and officiates at Guild
tournaments. |

Shihan Trevor Tockar. Kyokushin Style
Shihan Trevor Tockar 6th Dan has practiced
Kyokushin Karate for
thirty-eight years and was awarded his 6th Dan by
Kancho Matsui in February
1996. He was for two decades South African branch-chief, and
vice-chairman of the IKO (International
Karate Organization Kyokushin) for the continent of Africa.
He has officiated in international events all over the world, and is
an internationally accredited referee.
Shihan Tockar has throughout his career had a keen involvement with
the Maccabi organization, and was captain of the first ever karate
team to participate in the Maccabi
Games in Israel when, in 1973, he took a South African
“goodwill” team to the Games – thereby introducing karate into the
Maccabi Games. He again went to Israel in 1981 as a member of the
South African team, and in 2005 he was coach of the Australian youth
team which participated in the 17th Maccabi Games.
In
2001 Shihan Tockar and his family emigrated to Australia and is now
practicing as a Barrister at the Bar in Sydney. Shihan Tockar is the
chief instructor at the new karate dojo that has been established at
the Hakoah Club in Bondi.
With his experience and background, Shihan Tockar rates as one of
the most senior karate practitioners in Australia.

Shihan Jim Phillips. Kyokushin Style
Born 25th May, 1956, James Phillips began his
training in Kyokushin-kai Karate in 1973. An accomplished instructor
with 24 years experience in the martial arts, he is now regarded as one
of Australia's foremost karate-ka. His achievements include twice
National Lightweight Champion, National Middleweight Champion and also
competing in the Heavyweight division of the Grand Championships. In
1979 he represented Australia in the World Championships in Japan. He
has also won the State full-contact and non-contact titles numerous
times.
Jim takes
the opportunity to travel as often as he can, always seeking to
complement his martial arts knowledge for the benefit of his students.
He endeavours to visit Honbu (headquarters) or sponsor visits from
Japanese instructors regularly to keep the dojo abreast of the latest
developments in Kyokushin-kai.
Jim is
keen to foster relationships with other martial art styles outside
Kyokushinkai, believing that the transfer of knowledge can only benefit
all martial arts.

Sensei Jeff Krug. Shotokan Style
Sensei Jeff Krug
commenced his Karate career with the Japan Karate Association (JKA)
under Sensei Stan Schmidt in 1978, and was awarded his 6th Dan in
August 2006. Jeff was awarded South African national colours in 1994
to represent South Africa at the world JKA championships in
Philadelphia. He was also a member of the JKA Executive for South
Africa. Sensei Jeff has been involved with Maccabi throughout his
karate career. He was on the South African Maccabi Finance
committee. He represented South Africa in 1993 and 1997 at the
Maccabi games in Israel, and was coach of the Australian Senior team
at the 2005 Maccabi Games.
At
the beginning of 2004 Sensei Jeff under chief instructor Sensei
Keith Geyer formed the Shotokan Karate Coalition in Australia which
has close to 1000 members. Sensei Jeff is a highly rated Karate
instructor and teaches 3 times a week in Vaucluse.

Sensei Yossi Litvin. Shotokan Style
Sensei
Yossi Litvin first began training in 1970 and has extensive experience
training overseas including training in Japan, Europe and Israel. His
4th dan grading was conducted and awarded by Master Taiji Kase. As a
national and international competitor, Yossi has had much success
including titles as the National Kata & Kumite Champion (1995), and 2nd
in Kumite in the international Shotokan Tournament in Japan (1996).
Sensei
Yossi commenced teaching Shotokan over 16 years ago when he opened up
the Randwick Dojo in 1987, he now runs and teaches at the full time City
Dojo. Now a certified 5th Dan, Sensei Yossi's skills & experience are
reflected by his appointed positions as Kata Coach and Vice President
for the New South Wales Karate Federation. He is also an appointed
International Referee for the Australian Karate Federation. |
 
Sensei Lyle Abel. Kyokushin Style
Sensei Lyle Abel commenced practicing karate in 1976. Initially he
started practicing the Goju-ryu style but then transferred to the
Shukokai style. Currently Lyle is training together with Shihan
Tockar in Kyokushinkai at the Hakoah Dojo.
Lyle
was graded to Nidan by Kimura Sensei (8th Dan) in 1981 and, in
Japan, to Sandan by Yamada Sensei (9th Dan) in 1998. He was awarded
a further ranking of 3rd Dan in the Kyokushin style in 2003 and has
recently returned from Japan where he was graded to 4th Dan.
Lyle
was selected to represent South Africa at the Maccabi Games of 1981
and 1985 and also coached the Australian Maccabi karate squad in
their preparations for the 1997 Maccabi Games.
Sensei Lyle brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Guild
spanning multiple decades and multiple styles & disciplines in
Karate-Do.

Sensei David Delevski. Shotokan Style
Sensei David Delevski has achieved more at a younger
age than most. Being the son of Sensei Zivko Delevski has certainly been
an advantage.
David,
currently a 4th Dan, was a 3 time Australian Junior Maccabi Champion in
1995 at age 12 and 4 time Australian Senior Maccabi Champion since 2000,
including representing Australia on the 2005 Maccabiah Team.
He has
been awarded the 2005 NSW Maccabi Sportsman of the Year and inducted
into the Randwick City Council Hall of Sporting Champions. 2006 saw
David crowned MAIG's World Champion for Team Kata as well as 2 Silver
Medals for Kumite and Kata.
David has
been the SKIA NSW and Australian Champion many times between 1993 and
2007 and was on the SKIA National Team member in 2000, 2003 & 2006.
He was graded to 4th Dan by Master Kanazawa in 2007. David also holds a
degree in Sports Studies (coaching) B.Sp.St. and has Senior First Aid
and AIS Coaching accreditation.
With this
level of competition experience, Sensei David's position as one of our
most valuable instructors is without question.
Sense David specialises in
teaching primary-school aged students in Karate and self-defence. He
teaches at the Matraville and Maroubra Dojo twice per week each. |

Sensei Elliot Kleiner. Shotokan Style
Sensei
Elliot Kleiner began training in 1972 with Judo. He later moved to
Chinese Wing Chun Kung Fu in 1979, later settling with Shotokan
Karate in 1984 under KUA (Karate Union of Australia).
Elliot
was awarded his Shodan (1st Dan) in 2002 by 8th Dan Master Y. Sumi of the JKA (Japan Karate
Association) and went on to grade to Nidan (2nd Dan) with KUA in May 2004. Later
that same year, Elliot successfully graded to Nidan (International
Level), becoming the first Australian Yudansha (Black Belt) to
receive this honour from ISKDA (International Shotokan Karate-Do Alliance).
In 2008, Elliot successfully graded to Sandan (3rd Dan). He also currently holds NCAS Level 1 accreditation under the Australian
Federal Government Sports Coaching scheme as well as senior first aid
qualifications.
Sensei
Elliot was the author of the entire training manual and grading syllabus
currently being implemented for use as the new standard by the Karate
Union of Australia (NSW) for all grades up to and including Shodan
(Black Belt). His unique teaching methods have been adopted by many
Karate instructors around the world as some of the fastest and most
effective ways to achieve top results in young students.
Elliot
has extensive experience in competition, having won many medals on
State, National and International levels over his career spanning 3
decades. He recently won Silver at the 2006 MAIG's for Team Kata, (just
behind Sensei David Delevski) and Elliot also received Silver in the Masters
Individual Kata. 2007 Saw Sensei Elliot take Silver at the Maccabi State
Championships for Master's Open Kumite. He has been Captain of the KUA NSW State team in 2002 &
2004 Competing in Margaret River WA and Gold Coast QLD respectively. His Coogee Dojo students have completely dominated every KUA State
and National championship tournament that they've competed in over the
last 4 years.
Sensei Elliot has
been successfully published numerous times including 2 books on
Karate Training Methodology and Philosophy. He also trains Kyokushin with Shihan Tockar on
weekends to further the augmentation of his Karate skills. |

 Sensei
Robert Traurig. Shotokan Style
Sensei
Robbie began training Martial Arts in the 1970's, beginning with grades
obtained in Judo. He later shifted to Shotokan Karate in the Early
1980's with SKAA, eventually settling with the Karate Union of
Australia, where he remains a senior instructor today.
Robbie
graded Shodan (1st Dan) with KUA in the late 1980's and again to Nidan
(2nd Dan) in 2004. In 2008, the legendary Master Sumi (8th Dan) of Japan
travelled to Australia to preside over Robbie's Sandan (3rd Dan)
grading.
Sensei
Robbie holds NCAS Coaching Accreditation with the Federal Government and
teaches in our Coogee Dojo in Sydney's East.
No
stranger to competition, Sensei Robbie has a plethora of tournament
accolades, having represented KUA on State, National and International
levels, all with medallist positions. His most recent successes include
Bronze at the 2006 MAIG's and 2007 Maccabi State Championships. |

 Sensei
Nicole Kalish. Shotokan Style
Sensei
Nicole began her Karate training in South Africa and joined the Karate
Union of Australia upon her arrival here only a few years ago.
Her
competition experience is impressive and has represented NSW in National
competitions and Australia was proud to have her as the only Shotokan
Black Belt Woman represented at the 2006 MAIGS where she won medal
positions.
JKA
Master Sumi recently graded Sensei Nicole to Nidan (2nd Dan) in 2008 and
she was granted her own club in Coogee where she specialises in the
teaching of children. |
